Hoka One One was launched in 2009 by former Salomon employees Jean-Luc Diard and Nicolas Mermoud, starting in France and now headquartered in California. The two developed and designed a shoe that would allow them to run downhill faster, creating the heavily cushioned, yet lightweight sneaker, with the brand name vaguely translating to “fly over the earth” from the Maori language.
