Maison Margiela was founded in France in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, soon becoming a leading luxury fashion brand. Studying at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Margiela became an honorary member of the Antwerp 6 despite graduating earlier than other members. Margiela was additionally well-known for his anonymity, rarely making appearances for interviews, on runway, and photographs. This was said to allow his audience to appreciate the clothing for itself rather than the persona behind it. In 2014, French designer John Galliano was appointed creative director, continuing Margiela’s legacy in avant-garde tailoring, with minimalist tones.
