Checkmate

Henri Frapin likes to spend Sundays in the spring in the garden facing his mansion. The house was built in 1702 and overlooks a field. From there, he can see the woods, the river, and grazing livestock. He was born and raised in this area. It is this bountiful scene that gives birth to the wine his family has been making since 1889. Henri's favorite time of day is when his son joins him around 11:00 a.m. and the sun warms the highlands of Segonzac. The chessboard is ready. The son sits and silently immerses himself in the joy of this game, a metaphorical match that unites him and his father. A light spring breeze brings the fresh scent of the forest that surrounds them. Citrus fruits ripen in unglazed pots on the table, warmed by the sunlight. The irises and heliotrope blooming along the path that leads to the exterior staircase of the villa dry their morning dew, open their blossoms, and spread their fragrance all around. Henri offers his son a cup of cardamom tea. It is his usual custom. Cardamom comes from India, the same place where this centuries-old game has been played. They play chess, trying to prolong this blessed time as long as possible while trying to checkmate each other. This is the bridge that binds the two generations, the paternal love that will connect them forever.
