IF sounds like when you stand alone in front of a mirror and ask yourself, "If ......". IF is the English title of a famous poem by Rudyard Kipling, but the French translation, "You will be a great man," doesn't seem to convey this nuance. The reason this translation is not perfect is that in order to become such an ideal man, one must first fulfill all of the conditions listed at "if......." In fact, rather than a definition, Kipling invites us to a path, a path to asceticism, and the essence of the man as defined by the poet exists only in this "if......".
